Cycas revoluta - a species is one of the most widely cultivated cycads, grown outdoors in warm temperate and subtropical regions, or under glass in colder areas. It has a feather shape, hard, evergreen leaves arrange like a crown on a single stem.

Plant Requirement:

Soil: It grows best in sandy, well-drained soil, preferably with some organic matter. It needs good drainage or it will rot. Cycas has a tap root system, the main root goes deep and doesn't bear root hairs. For its good growth soil should be firm but bread crumb texture.

Water: Cycas is a moderately water-loving plant. Cycas is susceptible to over-watering. Pot plants can be watered thoroughly twice a week.

Climate: It is fairly drought-tolerant and grows well in full sun or outdoor shade, but needs bright light when grown indoors. The leaves can bleach somewhat if moved from indoors to the full sun outdoors.

Garden Use: Cycas is used as a specimen plant in the garden.  It can be planted as a single plant or in a group. A good looking King Cycas is 2 to 3 meters in height.  The growth is noticeable and it brings a sense of cheerfulness in the garden.

Care and Maintenance:

Nutrition: Cycas requires moderate nutrition. Application of well-decomposed farmyard manure or vermicompost in topsoil is advised. Do not add a heavy dose of the manure or fertilizer as it may cause root damage. Turn the soil with trowel and water it thoroughly after the application of the dose.

Protection: Armoured scales and woolly aphids are common pests of Cycas which can be controlled by keeping pot and plant clean. As the pests feed on the lower surface of the leaves it's quite difficult to control them. Spray it with 2 ml washing liquid 10ml vegetable oil mixed in 250ml lukewarm water.

Horticulture Operations: Remove old and dried leaves from time to time. Cycas doesn't require special horticultural operations. During the high-temperature spells, the top leaves need to be bundled and tied with jute thread in order to protect the delicate growing crown.
