Phoenix Palm - Phoenix spp.
Phoenix palm or Date palm is a very hardy, evergreen, outdoor tropical plant. Its feather-like hard leaves form a good crown over a single stem. Phoenix grows tall and mighty and covers its head with hard leaf crowns.
Soil: Phoenix grows well in poor to moderate soils. Soil should be well-drained, good water holding capacity, and rich in organic matters. In rich soils, it grows darker leaves and strong stem.
Water: Phoenix requires less to moderate amount of the water for its growth and development. It grows well even if the soil is on the dry side.
Climate: Phoenix is a tropical plant. It is sunlight loving plant. It can be kept indoor but it will prefer to grow in the areas it can receive ample sunlight.
Garden Use: It can be planted as a specimen pot plant or in the ground as an avenue plant.
Care and Maintenance:
Nutrition: Phoenix is a moderate feeder. application of manure in 1 or 2 times a year is advised. Water it thoroughly after the application of manure dose.
Protection: It grows tender and delicate crowns in the center, which can attract weevils and beetles. It is also susceptible to white mealybugs and woolly aphids. It can be easily prevented by taking care of its health.
Horticulture Operations: As it grows plant it in a bigger pot to support its growth. Remove lower old and dried leaves.
