Sansevieria zeylanica is a close relative of Sansevieria trifasciata. It grows green vivid, sword-shape leaves with dark green stripes running horizontally.

Plant Requirement:

Soil: Sansevieria can grow best in general pot-mix. It has a shallow root system, and most of the feeder roots grow in sub-surface. Soil should be well-drained, good water holding capacity, and rich in organic matter. The pH of the soil should be 6.5 to 7.5

Water: Sansevieria requires a small amount of water to grow. Its thick leaves store water and food for a very long time. It is a succulent by growth habit and can go for a few days without water. Always choose the dry side when you are confused about when to water it.

Climate: It grows well in semi-shade or filtered sunlight conditions. It requires a low amount of sunlight to grow, which allows it to grow under full shade conditions as well. The optimum temperature to grow is 18 degrees Celcius to 32 degrees Celcius.

Garden Use: Sansevieria is mostly used as a pot plant, but it can be grown for soft borders, rock garden, wall side plantation, etc... It can be grown with other foliage plants as well. It adds a special character to flower beds and arrangements due to its dramatic and clean leaves.

Care and Maintenance:

Nutrition: Sansevieria can be said as poor to moderate feeder. It can be fertilized with well-decomposed farmyard manure or vermicompost twice a year for good growth and development.

Care should be taken to avoid dropping any manure or fertilizer in its rosette leaves, which may lead to decay.

Protection: It is a clean plant and doesn't attract any pests or diseases. It is tolerant to most of pests and diseases. Avoid soft rot and Red leaf spot diseases by managing water. Water should be applied at its base and Avoid overhead watering.

Horticulture Operations: Cleaning of the leaves and pot is advised. As it grows many suckers, repotting is advised once in a year. The suckers can be easily detached from mother plants, can be planted in new pots with general pot-mix.
